Essential Oils and Healing: A Brief History

"The use of essential oils dates back to ancient times, but there has never been a time when essential oils are more needed than today. The world is facing a medical disaster. Modern technology has produced the jet aircraft which can be the instrument of transferring contagious disease around the world in hours.  Fortunately, there are answers that provide a way for us to protect ourselves, our family and friends from these dangers. Research has shown that with their immune-stimulating properties essential oils can dramatically
enhance and support the building of the immune system, whether they are inhaled or rubbed on the body topically.  Even those who contact a cold or the flu recover 70% faster using essential oils."    --Dr. Gary Young

"The use of essential oils is one of the most powerful yet safe healing modalities we have today. It should be considered much more in medical treatment and healing."
--Dr. Terry Friedmann, MD

"Forgotten and ignored for many years, essential oils are coming back into their own, for many researchers and for a large section of the public, as the stars of medicine... The doctor who is familiar with essential oils can use them to treat a whole range of infections--pulmonary, hepatic, intestinal, urinary, uterine, rhinopharyngeal and cutaneous... Essential oils can neutralize enteritis and colitis, and relieve chronic bronchitis and pulmonary tuberculosis. The colon bacillus can not live in the presence of essential oils.  Essential oils are also indicated for cancer, and numerous other chronic degenerative diseases." --Dr. Jean Valnet, MD

During the Black Plague of the 17th century, a small band of thieves were caught in the act and brought before the King, who forced them to divulge a most curious secret. The thieves had been entering the homes of plague victims stripping the dead bodies of money, jewelry and anything else of value that could be found. Although the plague was highly contagious, not one of this morbid band of thieves ever contracted the dread plague--even though the thefts had put them in constant daily contact with the dead bodies of plague victims. The King, eager to protect himself and the Royal Family, demanded to know how the thieves had avoided contracting the plague.

Soon enough, the truth came out. The thieves were all members of the same family--a family from a long lineage of Apothecaries. Because of their intimate knowledge of the healing arts, passed down from generation to generation, they were familiar with a combination of specific plant oils that, when rubbed over the human body, would protect the body from contracting this most feared and deadly disease. The King forced the thieves to divulge the specific plant oils used, and the formula for extracting them from the plants. With that vital information in hand, he was thereby able to protect himself and his family from the deadly plague.

The recipe for the "thieves oil" can still be found in the Royal English Archives to this day. What's more, this story is not at all that unusual. In fact, it is widely known that many perfumers and tanners in 17th century England were also able to escape the Black Plague due to the fact that the powerful, sweet-smelling plant oils used in the making of various perfumes and in the scenting of leather goods exhibit phenomenal anti-microbial properties. Both the perfumers, and the tanners who traditionally scented their handmade leather gloves with perfumes before selling them, were protected by the anti-microbial actions of the plant oils in the perfumes they were constantly exposed to in their daily work.

History further reveals that virtually the entire town of Bucklersbury, England was spared from the plague, even while the residents of other towns in close proximity were dying in droves. How were the residents of Bucldersbury spared? Historians believe it was no fluke. This fortunate town was the center of the European lavender trade. Lavender is a plant the essential oil of which is widely used in making perfume. But more importantly, the oil of lavender has long been known to have powerful disease-fighting properties. In fact recent scientific and medical research has proven that the essential oil of lavender has immune-stimulating and anti-microbial properties that rival--and even surpass--many modern antiseptic chemicals and antibiotic drugs.

As Dr. Jean Valnet, M.D., one of the world's foremost authorities on the therapeutic uses of the essential oils points out, although the powerful medicinal value of essential oils is only now being rediscovered by modern medical science, it has actually been known for centuries. In fact, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold by ancient cultures, due to their phenomenal healing properties.

Dr. Valnet states, "In recent years both doctors and the public have re-discovered the medical value of essential plant oils, but the idea of using their properties to maintain or regain health goes back to antiquity... The Romans had their knowledge of essential oils from the Greeks, who in turn had received it from the Egyptians... Hippocrates, for example, tackled the plague epidemic in Athens by fumigating the whole city with aromatic essences of plant oils. Later, in the 19th century, it is known that perfumery workers always showed an almost complete immunity during cholera outbreaks."

So what exactly are essential oils, and why are cutting edge researchers and practitioners suddenly becoming so interested in them? In light of today's modern plagues, and the utter failure of our 20th century "wonder drugs" to stop them, it would be wise to examine these amazing healing and immune-boosting oils, and find out what medical science is now discovering about them, and why some researchers are becoming so excited about them.

What Are "Essential Oils?"

"Essential oils are the regenerating and oxygenating immune defense properties of plants. Their oxygenating molecules effectively transport nutrients and a myriad of other powerful chemical constituents to the cells, bringing life to the plants, destroying infections, staving off infestation, aiding in growth, and stimulating healing. They are to plants what blood is to the human body, and much, much more."
--Dr. Gary Young

"Dr. Taylor of the University of Austin, Texas has observed that essential oils present more new compounds than the chemists of the whole world could analyze in a thousand years. We now know that they are mixtures of many powerful and therapeutic chemical constituents. For example terpenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones and phenols. "   --Dr. Jean Valnet, MD

Essential oils are the subtle, volatile liquids or resins from plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. They are what give plants their characteristic odors, such as the fragrance of a rose or the aroma of cedar or pine. There are now 30,000 known aromatic molecules that make up various essential oils, and science readily admits it has only scratched the surface in identifying and cataloguing them. This is one reason why the amazing therapeutic actions of various essential oils are not yet fully understood.

What is understood is this: much like the blood of humans, essential oils are the transporters of the fundamental nutrients, vital elements and chemical constituents necessary to feed and nurture the cells of all plants. Because of their unique chemical structure, these oils have the ability to penetrate cell walls and transport oxygen, nutrients and hundreds of other vital chemical components inside each cell. The essential oils are literally the life force of the plant. The powerful chemical compounds they are composed of are what give plants the ability to initiate and maintain growth, repair structural damage, destroy infections, stave off infestation, and even reproduce.

The three primary elements of all essential oils are hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. However, essential oils contain a tremendous number of other powerful chemical groups including alcohols, phenols, esters, ethers, oxides, coumarins, sesquiterpenes, terpinols, ketones and alehydes. As you'll see in just a moment, these chemical constituents and the sub-compounds they are made up of are what give the essential oils many of their most awesome healing properties.

But before we delve into the chemistry of essential oils, and their amazing healing properties, let's look briefly at how they are manufactured within the plant itself: Essential oils are created and stored in specialized plant structures such as secretory cells, glands, glandular hairs and resin ducts. In a process similar to photosynthesis, plants create essential oils by trapping and transmuting light and energy. The secretory cells that produce the volatile oils trap the photo electromagnetic energy of the sun and, with the help of glucose, convert it into biochemical energy in the form of aromatic molecules. Through this incredible process, some of the most powerful natural healing elements known to man are created.

Here are some of the chief families of chemical constituents found in the essential oils, along with their most widely-acknowledged therapeutic properties...

Aldehydes--are highly reactive organic compounds that are anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, calming and sedative. They are found in many of the lemon scented oils including the oils of lemongrass, melissa and citronella. One of the principal aldehyde compounds, citral, is highly anti-infectious and anti-viral, particularly when applied topically on herpes simplex.

Phenols--are deadly to bacteria. They contain high levels of oxygenating molecules, and have powerful antioxidant properties. As a result, they are one of the most beneficial immunomodulating compounds of all of the aromatic groups. Some of the compounds in phenols include thymol, which is highly antiseptic, eugenol, which is also highly antiseptic and stimulating, and carvacrol, which has been shown to be antiseptic, superbly energizing and highly anti-cancerous.

Alcohols--are strongly anti-bacterial and anti-vital. Plus, the sesquiterpenol molecules in this group are anti-inflammatory and known to stimulate immune responses. Recent research from the universities of Berlin and Vienna show that these molecules can greatly increase oxygenation around the pineal and pituitary glands. Linalol, one of the most beneficial constituents of the alcohols, is highly anti-bacterial and works to boost the immune system.

Terpenes---are known to inhibit the accumulation of toxins in the human body, and help the liver and kidneys discharge built-up toxins. They are antiseptic and stimulating, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, analgesic, anti-spasmodic and sedative.

Ketones---are known to help stimulate cell regeneration and promote the formation of tissue. Because they also help dissolve and discharge mucous, they are particularly helpful with such conditions as asthma, cold, flu, and cough.

Esters-result from the reaction of an alcohol with an acid. They are known to produce a relaxing and soothing effect on the human body. Additionally, they have very strong anti-spasmodic properties, and phenomenal anti-fungal properties.

These are the chief chemical groups and their therapeutic properties found in various essential oils. Additional chemical constituents found in essential oils, with equally impressive healing properties, include...

Azulene--prevents the discharge of histamine from the tissues by activating the pituitary-adrenal system, causing the release of cortisone. Very useful for asthmatic conditions. Known to dramatically speed up the process of healing. Stimulates liver regeneration. Strongly anti-inflammatory.

Bisabolol--this is the strongest of the sesquiterpene alcohols. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antifungal. It is also known to be a powerful ulcer preventative.

Flavonoids--these show highly beneficial effects on the capillaries of the human body, increasing blood flow and oxygenation of the cells and tissues. Additionally, by inhibiting the action of methyl transferase in the human body, these chemicals prolong the body's natural epinephrine effects, thereby stimulating the pituitary-adrenal axis and exerting a highly beneficial regulatory effect on the adrenal hormones and endocrine organs.

Famesol--is highly anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.

Famesene--strongly anti-viral in action.

Limonen~---known to exhibit incredibly strong anti-viral properties.

Terpene alcohols--highly anti-bacterial and stimulating to the immune system.

Terpene hydrocarbons---highly antiviral.

Thujone---relieves respiratory distress and stimulates the immune system. Has recently been shown to be highly beneficial in the reduction and destruction of malignant tumors, particularly in breast cancer.

Quite an impressive list, we think you'll agree. And believe it or not, the above list barely touches the surface of what modern medical science is now discovering regarding the powerful therapeutic, healing and immune boosting properties of the literally thousands of chemical constituents found in essential oils. Many scientists, in fact, believe that over the course of the next decade, it will be some of these specific constituents of various essential oils that will finally help bring a halt to the burgeoning epidemic of chronic degenerative disease now rocking this country, including cancer, arthritis, heart disease, chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis and more!

What Science Now Knows: Powerful Therapeutic of Essential Oils

"Essential oils include muscle relaxants, digestive tonics, circulatory stimulants and hormone precursors. Many repair injured cells; others carry away metabolic waste. In addition, a number of essential oils enhance immunity, working with the body to heal itself. They are capable of stimulating the production of phagocytes (white blood cells that attack invaders). And some are antitoxic. Many essential oils have been proven effective against fungi and yeast, parasites and viruses. Others fight infection with amazing effectiveness, killing bacteria by disrupting their life cycle. And unlike conventional antibiotic drugs, essential oils are ‘probiotic' they not only kill pathogenic bacteria, but tend to leave beneficial bacteria intact. Finally, bacteria typically do not acquire a resistance to essential oils, as they so often do to antibiotic drugs."             ---Green and Keville "Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art"

"What do the oils do? First of all they are transporters; they transport products to the cells of our body. Secondly, they contain ATP which serves as the power source of the cells - the fuel. Essential oils normalize the viscosity of the blood and facilitate the delivery of vital nutrients. Some oils are antispasmodic and help relieve migraine headaches and mental fatigue. Others reduce the pain and swelling of arthritis, release liver toxins, clean the gallbladder, clear up acne and stimulate the secretion of gastric juices, while even others work to improve nerve impulses and synaptic connections, and heal bums, cuts and infected wounds. Some oils reverse insomnia and anxiety, lower cholesterol relieve PMS symptoms, stimulate the immune functions and destroy fungi, bacteria and viruses, among many other important functions."
  --Dr. Terry Friedmann, MD

One of the principal characteristics of essential oils is that they contain a myriad of powerful oxygenating molecules. This is why essential oils, when applied to the skin or when inhaled, have the ability to dramatically increase cellular oxygenation. Their oxygenating molecules are able to penetrate the walls of human cells with ease, bringing many of the associated nutrients and other therapeutic elements directly into the coils with them. This, in turn, begins almost immediately to boost the human immune system.

Incredible as it may seem, recent research shows that essential oils placed anywhere on the body will penetrate every single cell of the body within 21 minutes. They will even penetrate a fingernail or toenail almost instantly to treat fungus underneath! This stands in marked contrast to the average of 13 to 23 hours for the therapeutic constituents of dried herbs to reach the cells of the human body after ingestion.

What's more, essential oils are extremely concentrated, particularly when they have been derived through distillation, which is the most effective method of extraction. The oils contain virtually, all of the plant's healing nutrients, oxygenating molecules, amino acids precursors, coenzyme A factors, trace minerals, enzymes, vitamins, hormones and more. And because essential oils are so highly concentrated, most of them are at least 50 times more therapeutically potent than the herbs or plants from which they are derived.

This is important information to grasp. When you consider, for example, the proven healing powers of various herbs, you can't help but see why the essential oils are known to have even greater therapeutic properties. For example, when herbs are cut and dehydrated for human therapeutic use, they can lose all the way up to 90% of the healing nutrients contained within, as well as the vast majority of the vital oxygen molecules which are needed to deliver the nutrients to the cells of the human body. Not so with extracted essential oils. They are the healing life force of the plant--but in concentrations 50 times or more powerful that what you could get even if you ate the herb or plant raw!

This is why many researchers and practitioners--including some of the world's most prominent doctors---actually consider essential oils to be medicine. For example, Dr. Jean Valnet, MD, the well-known French medical researcher and essential oil expert, points out that the essential oil from thyme literally destroys the anthrax bacillus, the typhoid bacillus, the glanders bacillus, staphylococcus, the diphtheria bacillus, meningococcus, and Koch's bacillus, which is the bacteria responsible for tuberculous lesions!

He further points out, "The essence of lemon is second to none in its antiseptic and bactericidal properties. The works of Morel and Rochaix have demonstrated that the vapors of lemon essence alone will neutralize the meningococcus in 15 minutes, the typhus bacillus in less than an hour, pneumococcus in one to three hours, staphylococcus aureus in two hours and hemolytic streptococcus in three to twelve hours. Applied directly, the essential oil itself neutralizes the typhus bacillus and staphylococcus in only five minutes and the diphtheric bacillus in just 20 minutes."

Until recently, the bulk of research on the therapeutic properties of essential oils has been carried out in Europe and the Middle East, most notably France, Egypt and Israel each country having a rich, centuries-old history of the use of various essential oils for therapeutic purposes. It has been these scientific studies which have finally jolted a small number of far-sighted researchers within the American medical and scientific community to sit up and take note of the incredible anti-microbial power of essential oils, particularly in light of today's plague of deadly antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.

In tests conducted in France by Professor Griffon, Director of the French Police Toxicology Laboratory, the antiseptic effect of a blend of essential oils---including pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon---was studied in order to test the ability of the oils to purify the air of harmful disease-causing bacteria. First, Professor Griffon set up a number of Petri dishes approximately 15cm from ground level in an open room, allowing them to stand for 24 hours, the germs from the air being collected naturally as they settled into the open Petri dishes. After 24 hours he analyzed the dishes, finding them to contains 210 colonies of various microbes, including numerous molds and staphylococci. He then sprayed the mixture of essential oils in the form of an aerosol into the air in the room. After only 15 minutes, only 14 colonies of microorganisms out of the original 210 were left alive. After 30 minutes, only FOUR colonies of the original 210 were left. Importantly, ALL of the potentially harmful disease-causing molds and staphylococci had been killed within the first 30 minutes.

In another French experiment, the number of pathogenic microorganisms in various locations were measured. In a forest, there were found to be five pathogenic microorganisms in the air for every one cubic meter. In an average apartment, there were found to be 20,000 microbes in the air per cubic meter. In public stores, there were found to be nine million microbes in the air per cubic meter. On the top of a work table there were found to be five million microbes per square meter. On a carpet, nine million. And in the air of a large hospital there were found to be on average 10,000 microbes per cubic meter. According to Dr. Valnet, when an inquisitive doctor put some of the microbe-laden air from the hospital into a flask containing just a few drops of essential oils, 40% of the microbes were destroyed in only 20 minutes, 80% in an hour, and 100% in nine hours!

Dr. Valnet concluded, "Clearly, the administering of essential oils by fine aerosol spray should be common practice in sick rooms, operating rooms and clinics."

Spurred by the French research, recent studies conducted here in the United States have confirmed the powerful anti-microbial actions of essential oils. In one recent research demonstration, Petri dishes were used in which the medium had been infected with various pathogenic bacteria. Then, three very small round pieces of paper [About the size you'd get from a hole punch--Ed.] were placed in the infected medium of each dish. One piece of paper in each dish had been infiltrated with Penicillin or Ampicillin. The other two pieces were infiltrated with the essential oils of cinnamon and oregano. When left to incubate, a dark shadow would appear around the pieces of paper where the bacteria in the medium were being destroyed. The diameter of the dark circle around each tiny piece of paper was indicative of the kill ratio of the antibiotic or essential oil. The test results were dramatic. In each case, the essential oils proved to be many times more effective at killing the pathogenic microorganisms than the antibiotics!  Moreover, when the amount of antibiotics placed on the paper dots were increased, their effectiveness did not increase, but remained the same. But when the amount of oils placed on the paper dots was increased, their effectiveness soared!

Dr. Valnet points out that pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria do not become resistant to essential oils as they do to modern-day synthetic antibiotic drugs. He states, "Infectious microbes do not appear to become accustomed to the essential oils as they do to the many forms of treatment using antibiotics. This is very important. Antibiotics are certainly powerful weapons, but they can be dangerous and are easily and often misused... indeed, quite apart from the abusive use of antibiotics, the dramatic increase recently in the resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to all types of antibiotics, sometimes even
the latest ones, is well known. [However] we are finding that the effects of the same oils remain almost unchanged...  The body cannot become 'habituated' in the pejorative sense of the word--i.e., no longer able to derive any benefit--to the oils any more than it can become habituated to pure mountain air or personal hygiene. The results remain the same; they do not lessen over any length of time."

And, unlike many of today's most popular antiseptic chemicals, essential oils do not harm human tissue. As Dr. Valnet states, "Essential oils are especially valuable as antiseptics because their aggression towards microbial germs is matched by their total harmlessness to tissue---one of the chief defects of chemical antiseptics is that they are likely to be as harmful to the cells of the organism as to the cause of the disease."

The successful therapeutic uses of essential oils are so varied and so great, the list of healing benefits literally boggles the mind. For example:

Dr. Valnet points out that unlike antibiotics, many of the essential oils have strong anti-viral properties, and can provide remarkable protection against viral infections ranging from shingles to influenza. He also notes that, "Cancerous wounds are amenable to treatment with essential oil. The essences have this healing effect because of their ability to increase the blood supply to the tissues, and this assists both the vital detergent action of the white corpuscles as well as cell regeneration."

Additionally, wounds of all types appear to heal quicker when treated with essential oils. According to Dr. Valnet, "When essential oils are used on both large and small wounds, healing takes place quickly without dangerous toxicity or the formation of scars." Skin disease also appears to benefit greatly from the use of essential oils. States Dr. Valnet, "The various dermatoses, acne and blotches are curable by both local and general treatment with essential oils. Local application of the oils also acts upon the adjacent organ such as the liver, intestine or circulatory system, whose deficiency has given rise to the cutaneous problem."

Furthermore, according to Dr. Valnet, many essential oils have proven to be anti-neuralgic, anti-rheumatic, and beneficial to the entire body and its organs. "Recent research has proved that the essential oils pass directly through the layers of the skin to be rapidly circulated in the blood, and then eliminated via the lungs and kidneys in particular.  The organs benefit from the disinfectant, antispasmodic or stimulant properties of the oils in the process. Using the essential oil of juniper in bath water, for example, is recommended for people suffering from rheumatism or arthritis."

Dr. Valnet further states that various essential oils can be used to treat conditions ranging from high blood pressure to fatigue. For example, "The oils of lavender and marjoram lower arterial pressure. On the other hand the essences of hyssop, rosemary, sage and thyme raise arterial pressure by liberating adrenaline a result of direct action on the area of the cortex of the adrenal gland."

We can't emphasize enough that the therapeutic properties of essential oils are literally too numerous to fully describe in the pages of only one short report. This is because the oils are composed of literally thousands of chemical compounds and sub-compounds, each of which have their own therapeutic actions on the human body. Beneficial therapeutic properties that medical science has verified so far include:

 · Oxygenating
 · Immune stimulating
 · Mineralizing
 · Tissue rejuvenating
 · Organ rejuvenating
 · Cellular function rejuvenating
 · Anti-microbial
 · Anti-viral
 · Antiseptic
 · And-infectious
 · Anti-rheumatic
 · Anti-bacterial
 · Anti-fungal
 · Anti-oxidant
 · Anti-toxic
 · Anti-venomous
 · And More

A Brief Word About the Frequencies of Essential Oils

The effectiveness of essential oils cannot be fully understood without some discussion of frequency. Frequency is the measurable rate of electrical energy flow that is constant between any two points. Everything has frequency. Dr. Robert O. Becker, in his book The Body Electric, establishes conclusively that the human body has an electrical frequency and that much about a person's health can be determined by the frequency of the person's body.

In 1992 the pioneering scientist and researcher Bruce Tainio built the first "Bio-frequency" monitor in the world. Tainio has shown that the average frequency of the human body during the day time is 62 to 72 Hz. His research shows that when the frequency of the human body drops substantially, it is a clear indication that the immune system has become compromised. If the frequency drops to 58 Hz, cold and flu symptoms often appear. At 55 Hz, diseases related to a compromised immune system (such as the Candida fungus) begin to take hold, at 52 Hz more serious immune-related diseases such as Epstein Barr and chronic fatigue syndrome occur, and at 42 Hz, cancer.

Researchers now know that when substances with lower frequencies (such as junk foods, synthetic drugs or even poor quality vitamin and mineral supplements) come into contact with the human body, they can rapidly pull the body's healthy electrical frequency down to substandard levels, helping create a climate where disease and illness can flourish. Therefore, low frequency foods, drugs, supplements and other substances should be avoided. Unfortunately, much of what we put into our bodies these days is of a decidedly lower frequency than that which the body needs to maintain vibrant health. For example, processed and canned foods have been shown to have a frequency of zero. Unfortunately, it is denatured "foods" like these that represent the vast majority of the modern American diet. By pulling the body's normal frequency down to excessively low levels these foods help create the perfect environment for disease-causing microorganisms and the resultant disease states.

Fresh produce, on the other hand, has a frequency of up to 15 Hz. Dry herbs have frequencies ranging from 12 to 22 Hz. And fresh herbs range from 20 to 27 Hz. These can help the human body maintain its own high electrical frequency.

Interestingly, recent research has shown that when substances with higher frequencies come into contact with disease-causing organisms of a lower frequency, the disease causing organism is destroyed.  Bruce Tainio has recently demonstrated that the frequencies of essential oils range from 52Hz to a whopping 320 Hz, depending upon the specific oil being measured. This means that the essential oils have the highest frequencies of any natural substance known to man. When used on the human body, they have the ability to raise the body's electrical frequency to peak levels, creating an environment in which low frequency organisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi cannot function or live for very long!

[As more becomes known regarding the electrical frequencies of essential oils and their beneficial effects on the human body, you can rest assured that we intend to let our subscribers know. What is known so far is that high electrical frequencies of essential oils appears to be directly related to their amazing abilities to kill even the most virulent forms of pathogenic microorganism, and boost the Immune system of the human body. For example, Dr. Valnet points out that the essential oil of clove has been found to have electronic constituents which are opposed to cancer and to diseases." Of course, clove, Like all essential oils, has an extremely high electrical frequency. Moreover, it has only recently been found to be one of three specific essential oils in the presence of which no pathogenic microorganism can live (oregano and cinnamon arc the other two)--Ed.]

How to Use Essential Oils

There are any number of ways to use essential oils, but the two most popular ways are diffusion into the air, and direct application onto the skin. We'll discuss diffusion first.

Diffusion

Diffusion of essential oils into the air of an enclosed space (such as a house or office) is popularly called aromatherapy. That's because the highly aromatic, sweet-smelling molecules of the essential oils are literally breathed into the human body, at which point they trigger numerous immune boosting, healing, relaxation or stimulation responses depending upon the specific oils being inhaled. Dr. Valnet points out that whether applied directly, or inhaled, essentials oils have virtually the same therapeutic impact on the human body. And Dr. Gary Young points out that the body's response time to inhalation of essential oils can be as quick as one to three seconds! This is why, for many people, inhalation is the preferred method of use of the essential oils

According to Dr. Young, here's how inhalation of the essential oils work. "The integral part of the nose responsible for odor detection is the olfactory, consisting of two membranes, one on each side of the mucous membrane covering the bony extension of the nose. The olfactory membranes are very tiny and are well protected by the casing of the nose. They contain about 800 million nerve endings for detecting and processing odorous molecules. These receptors are so small, that they are only visible through an electron microscope on high magnification. The nerve endings are triggered from a signal from the genes along the inside passage of the nose. The olfactory hair like nerves receive the micro-fine, vaporized oil particles, carrying them along the axon of the nerve fibers, connecting them with the synapse of the secondary neurons in the olfactory bulb. The nerve from the olfactory bulb extends back toward the mid-brain, which is a direct extension of the limbic system of the brain. The impulses carried to the limbic system and the olfactory sensory center at the base of the brain pass between the pituitary and pineal gland, and then to the amygdala and on to the gustatory center."

Throughout this complex route, the oil molecules trigger millions of electrical signals and impulses that form coded messages which are then dispatched to various areas of the body This is one reason why oil inhalation tends to increase the production of endorphines (the body's natural pain relievers and mood elevators), as well as neuro-transmitters and antibodies, thereby dramatically boosting the immune system, creating an overall sense of well being (either relaxation or stimulation, depending upon the oil) and increasing the general state of health of the entire body.

Moreover, when oils are diffused in a home or office, they purify the air itself by removing toxins, metallic particles and other harmful microscopic debris. They also increase the atmospheric oxygen of the air, and boost levels of beneficial ozone and negative ions which, as shown earlier in this report, dramatically inhibit the growth and reproduction of airborne pathogens. Further, as the odorous molecules drift to the various surfaces of each room (ie., ceilings, floors, walls, tiling etc.), they rapidly kill virtually all pathogenic bacteria, rifles, molds and fungi they come into contact with. And lastly, they completely destroy odors from mold, cigarettes, household pets and more.

Essential oils can be diffused into the air in a number of ways. During summer months when you have a fan or air conditioner running, one of the simplest ways to diffuse is to put a few drops of your favorite oil onto a kleenex and secure the kleenex next to the air vent or the fan cage so that the air blows across it. The blowing air then circulates the aromatic molecules of the essential oil throughout your house, and you breathe them in as you go about your normal daily household activities.

Perhaps the most popular and effective method of diffusing oils is to buy a product called a Diffuser, which sprays an ultra-fine mist of the essential oil of your choice into the air. The millions of misted particles sprayed from a diffuser are so fine they can hang in the air of your house literally for hours, spreading from room to room via the normal air circulation that occurs as you walk through your house.

One of our favorite methods of diffusing, if only because of its simplicity, is to purchase an inexpensive 4 oz. or 6 oz. "mister" or spray bottle such as you'd use to mist house plants. Fill the mister with water, add 15 or 20 drops of essential oil, shake well, and then walk through your house briefly "misting" each room with the solution as you go.

Regardless of which method of diffusion you choose, you'll find immediate beneficial effects. For example, diffusing oils into a room where someone is sick with a cold or flu can cut their downtime by half or more. According to the experts, recovery can be accelerated by as much as 70%! And regular diffusion of essential oils can practically eliminate your normal change-of-season bouts with colds or flu. According to Dr. Valnet, "Many essences (e.g. cinnamon, pine, thyme, lemon) have marked effects on influenza, and patients treated with these essences seem to get through the winter without trouble."

By way of personal experience with these amazing essential oils, we have found them to offer much in the way of additional therapeutic benefits, going way beyond their powerful immune boosting and anti-microbial properties. For example, simply smelling the essential oil of lavender right out of the bottle can knock out a stubborn sinus headache within 60 to 90 seconds. Smelling the essential oil of eucalyptus for just several minutes helps to open clogged nasal passages and clear up sinus congestion like magic. And smelling the essential oil of peppermint for several minutes will usually completely eliminate acid indigestion and heartburn.

We have also personally discovered that the essential oils of birch or helichrysum will often completely alleviate knee and joint pains when applied directly to the painful area. That's because they both have chemical constituents that are anti-inflammatory and analgesic, in addition to their oxygenating, immune-boosting and anti-microbial properties! Other essential oils, such as rose, lavender and ylang ylang can be rubbed into the area of the back, up and down the spine, just before bedtime if you suffer from insomnia. Their amazing calming and relaxing effects practically guarantee a sound nights sleep--even if you're a chronic insomniac! And again, you receive these benefits on top of all of the other powerful anti-pathogenic, immune-boosting, cell-nourishing, body oxygenating and health-enhancing properties of the oils!

Direct Application
As mentioned earlier in this report, direct application of essential oils to any area of the human body results in almost immediate penetration of the cells of the body [Believe it or not, in addition to the application of the oil or oil blend directly on or over the affected arcs, one of the most effective and efficient means of application of the oils is to specific areas on the bottom of the feet!--Ed.]. In as little as 21 minutes, virtually every cell of the body will have been penetrated by the oil, regardless of where the oil was applied. Furthermore, the essential oils carry their oxygen molecules and micronutrients right into the cells with them, nourishing and oxygenating literally every cell in the body in an extraordinarily efficient manner unmatched by any other product on earth. Of course, anytime your cells get the vital nutrients and oxygen they need, they become more robust, healthy and resistant to illness and disease.

What You Need to Know Before You Purchase Essential Oils.

Unfortunately, not all essential oils are created equal.  In fact, many if not most of the essential oils on the market today are what's called 'perfume quality' or 'fourth and Fifth quality' oils. Usually found at health food stores or through discount mail-order suppliers, these are over-processed, chemical laden, highly adulterated and de-natured products that, in reality, are little more than cheap perfume made from various odorous plants. They contain little or none of the beneficial therapeutic qualities of pure essential oils. Of course, unwitting consumers are never given this information by the purveyors of these oils [Who also may or may not know any better--Ed.]. And unfortunately, it is only when you get the oil home and use it that you find out it is completely devoid of therapeutic benefits.

Pure, unadulterated therapeutic essential oil is extremely difficult to come by--and often very expensive. One reason for this is because it can take as many as 500 to 2000 pounds or more of raw plant material to produce just a single pound of pure essential oil. And that pound of pure essential oil can cost anywhere from $1,000 to S15,000, depending upon the amount of raw plant material needed to extract the oil, and the difficulty involved in extracting it. This is why so many distributors today purchase inexpensive and adulterated fourth or fifth quality oils in large quantities, and then re-bottle these denatured products in smaller quantities for sale to the unsuspecting public at steep mark-ups!

You also need to know that the purity and therapeutic quality of essential oils are dramatically affected by several other very important factors, including the location the plants are grown in., the climate the plants are grown in, the growing procedures used for each particular plant, the harvesting procedures used, and the extraction procedures used. The plants for pure therapeutic quality essential oils must be grown organically, in the right location and at precisely the right climate. Many of them have to be harvested with great care, by hand, in order not to damage the plant or its delicate oils. Furthermore, the harvesting must be done at precisely the right time of the year, when the oils in the plant are at peak potency. And rather than the high heat and chemical extraction processes used by so many essential oil distributors (which rob the oils of the vast majority of their vitality), true therapeutic-quality essential oils absolutely MUST be extracted by steam distillation using extremely low pressure and low heat so as not to defile the quality of the oil.

These factors are not optional. They are mandatory if a plant oil is to be sold as a pure, therapeutic-quality essential oil. Yet in the course of our research into the essential oils, we have found only one major producer of essential oil in the entire United States whose products were able to meet every aspect of the above criteria.

Meet Dr. Gary Young

Actually, it was not surprising to us that America's foremost expert on essential oils and their therapeutic uses, Dr. Gary Young, would also turn out to be one of the few producers in the entire world who cares enough to produce pure, unadulterated, therapeutic, quality essential oils for public use.

Dr. Young's credentials are impeccable. He studied essential oils under the famous French researcher Dr. Lapraz [Lapraz pioneered the use of essential oils to treat and cure chronic respiratory diseases--Ed.] at the Geneva Medical University in Switzerland. Later, he went to Paris to study under Dr. Belaiche, a leading French physician who brought much-needed understanding to the entire western world regarding the previously unknown chemical properties of the essential oils.

Dr. Young then went on to conduct private research into the essential oils at the prestigious Warwick University in England, as well as the University of London. He then traveled to Cairo, Egypt to study essential oils under Dr. Farag, head of the biochemistry department at Cairo University. [Farag documented the oxygenating molecular activity of essential oils, and was responsible for the modern-day scientific documentation of their powerful antioxidant and anti-microbial activity. He has written and published over 90 medical research papers on the essential oils, and has received more awards than any other person in this field of study--Ed.]

Later, Dr. young founded his own clinic where he experimented with pure essential oils and continued his research into their amazing therapeutic properties. He also pioneered the field of blood crystallization study, and helped advance the study of blood and its relationship to bacteria and viruses through darkfield microscopy.

Today, he heads Young Living Essential Oils, the research and development company he rounded for the purpose of bringing pure therapeutic-quality essential oils to the American public. He is one of only a mere handful of experts in the world today familiar with the multitude of requirements for growing, distilling and protecting oil quality. And he is the very first to conduct research and studies in North America on the use of essential oils for the treatment of degenerative diseases. His farm in Idaho cultivates the largest acreage of lavender in this country, and he's the first in North America to grow organic plants for the distillation of essential oils.

Finally...
Pure, Therapeutic-Quality Essential Oils Available In the United States!

Fortunately, just as today's growing plague of pathogenic, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, mutating viruses, infectious fungi and disease-causing parasites has begun to sweep across the nation like a tidal wave, Dr. Young has been in the process of launching his company, Young Living Essential Oils, on a national basis in order to help bring pure therapeutic-quality essential oils to the forefront of public consciousness at precisely this time of most dire and urgent need. In researching his oils, we discovered that they are not only the highest quality oils available here in the entire United States, but they are also very reasonably priced in spite of the fact that he must import many of the oils from special farms in France, Egypt, Inner Mongolia and China where the best growing locations and growing climates arc located for the vast majority of essential oil plants.

You've Got to Try These Oils:

At present, Young Living Essential Oils offers 54 different kinds of 100% pure, therapeutic-quality essential oils, and 45 different blends of 100% pure, therapeutic quality essential oils. Because of this wide range of choices, Dr. Young has put together a special "introduction to essential oils" kit for first time essential oil users, consisting of three bottles of some of the most important and powerful of the essential heating oils (peppermint, lemon and lavender), and four bottles containing specially formulated blends of essential healing oils, for a total of seven bottles of essential oils.  Dr. Young calls this kit The Essential 7. Each bottle contains a full 5 ml. of highly concentrated essential oils--more than enough to help you become thoroughly familiar with the amazing therapeutic properties of the various oils they contain. All of the oils in this kit are 100% pure, unadulterated, therapeutic quality essential oils Young Living Oils produces nothing less.

Each of the seven different oils and oil blends in the Essential 7 kit can be diffused, applied directly to the body, or even added to the bath water. Here are descriptions of the oils you'll find in this kit, and their most widely acknowledged therapeutic properties:

    1) Lavender--Known as the "universal" essential oil because of its worldwide use in healing, it is highly touted for its phenomenal ability to heal severe burns, cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. It is also widely known for its almost instantaneous ability to cure headaches, relieve insomnia, alleviate the symptom of PMS, and reduce stress. The fragrance is calming and relaxing, both physically and emotionally. Perhaps most importantly of all, it kills staphylococcus, the typhoid bacillus, the diphtheria bacillus, the tuberculosis bacillus, as well as pneumococcus, homolytic streptococcus and many other dangerous pathogenic microorganisms, and has strong anti-venom properties as well.

     2) Lemon--Known to promote leukocyte formation and increase lymphatic function, thereby dramatically boosting the body's immune system. It kills many forms of bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms on contact, including meningococcus, the typhus bacillus, pneumococcus, staphylococcus aureus, diphtheric bacillus, and hemolytic streptococcus. It also helps purify the air and water, and promotes a sense of well-being when inhaled or applied. It is full of important vitamins including B, B1, B2, B3, A, C and PP (a factor in protection of the vascular system). It is also known to be hypotensive (ie., it lowers blood pressure), antiseptic and bactericidal, cardiotonic (normalizes heart function), and a potent antidote for a variety of toxins.

     3) Peppermint--Known to dramatically and rapidly improve mental acuity and alertness, vanquish fatigue, soothe the respiratory system, relieve nausea, fever and vomiting, and quickly put a stop to acid indigestion and heartburn. It also kills intestinal parasites, as well as staphylococcus, the tuberculosis bacillus, and numerous other pathogenic microorganisms. When diffused, it purifies the air and water, and is known to be a mild aphrodisiac, helping to relieve impotence.  Peppermint is also often used as an inhalant for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and sinusitis, and is known for its pain relieving properties.

4) Purification--This is a blend of 100% pure essential oils including Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavendin, and Melaleuca. It was specially developed by Dr. Gary Young for the purpose of purifying the air of airborne pathogens and neutralizing mildew, cigarette smoke, and other odors found in homes, offices and confined areas.
  · Citronella is known to be highly antiseptic and anti-bacterial, it is antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory as   well.
  · Lemongrass is known to be strongly antiseptic and anti-parasitic. It is also very calming, highly beneficial for the digestive system, and anti-inflammatory.
  · Lavendin is similar to lavender (see above), and has many of the same powerful therapeutic properties.
  · Melaleuca is known to be highly anti-infectious, anti-bacterial, antifungal, anti-viral, anti-parasitic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, immune-stimulating, decongestant, neurotonic (i.e., it calms jangled nerves) and pain-relieving.
[This is an extremely powerful and highly therapeutic essential oil blend we feel should be found in every home first aid kit or medicine cabinet--Ed.]

5) Joy--This is a blend of pure essential oil-~ that include Ylang ylang, Bergamot, Citrus and Bulgarian Rose oils.  It was specially developed by Dr. Gary Young to relax the body and mind, and bring about an enhanced sense of well being and security.
  · Ylang ylang is highly antiseptic and widely used to fight intestinal infections. It is also wonderfully hypotensive (i.e., it relieves tension and high blood pressure)...it reduces hyperpnoea (i.e., over-accelerated breathing)...it alleviates tachycardia (i.e., rapid heart beat)...and it is known to work wonders on sexual debilities such as impotence in men and frigidity in women.
  · Bergamot has been used in the Middle East for hundreds of years as an effective treatment for infectious diseases, cold sores, insect bites, ulcers, sore throat, thrush, and depression. It is known to have about 300 powerful chemical constituents and has a refreshing, uplifting quality on the human body.
  · Citrus is naturally relaxing and calming, especially for children. It works extremely well as an antiseptic in the air for killing bacteria.
  · Bulgarian Rose has the highest electrical frequency of all essential oils at 320 Hz, and because of this, it enhances the electrical frequency of every cell in the body, bringing about heightened immunity and overall good health. It is highly anti-infectious, and known to help alleviate chronic bronchitis, asthma and tuberculosis. Best of all it is stimulating and elevating to the mind, and has an intoxicating, aphrodisiac-like fragrance.
[This is another powerful oil blend that we think should be used regularly--even daily--in every home---Ed.]

    6) Peace and Calming---This is a blend of pure essential oils that include Citrus, Ylang ylang, Tanactum and Patchouly. It was specially developed by Dr. Gary Young to help promote relaxation and a sense of calm after a stressful day. Additionally, when diffused in the home it helps gently relax overactive, upset or hard-to-manage children. (We have already discussed the numerous therapeutic and anti-microbial properties of Citrus and Ylang ylang above.)
  · Tanactum (also known as Blue Tansy) is one of the rarest and most therapeutic of the essential oils. It is known to be highly anti-viral and anti-bacterial. It fights colds, flu and infection. Additionally, it aids the body's nervous system by modulating neurotransmitters, reducing stress and bringing about a general feeling of well being.
  · Patchouly is among the top 10 oils used in aromatherapy. It is known to be powerfully anti-infectious, antiseptic, and bactericidal. Additionally, it helps regenerate tissue, and is anti-inflammatory. It is also used as a general tonic that helps bring about a relaxed sate when diffused or applied directly.
If you have any trouble with insomnia or stress, we believe this is one of the most beneficial essential oils blends you could ever use. We have personally used this blend to great effect for overcoming insomnia and calming anxiety. Additionally, because of the Citrus and Patchouly it contains, it has the ability to rid your home of dangerous airborne pathogens and other potentially harmful debris when diffused!

    7) PanAway--This is a blend of essential oils that include Helichrysum, Birch, Clove, and Peppermint. It was specially developed by Dr. Gary Young to help reduce inflammation, promote healthy circulation and healing, and alleviate pain. It has proven to be highly effective for the relief of arthritis and rheumatic symptoms, sports injuries, sprains, and muscle spasm. (We have already discussed the many beneficial therapeutic properties of Peppermint above.)
  · Helichrysum is an all-around beneficial essential oil that is widely known to help regenerate tissue and reduce tissue pain. It has also been shown to stimulate liver cell function, improve hearing loss, and reduce scarring and discoloration of the skin.
 · Birch contains 99% methyl salicylate, which has a completely natural cortisone-like action that is highly beneficial for muscle, bone and joint discomfort. It is extremely helpful in decreasing pain from arthritis, tendonitis and rheumatism.
· Clove is widely known for its powerful pain-relieving properties. It is also one of the three essential oils in which no known bacteria, virus or fungus can live. It is anti-infectious, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and antiseptic. It is used in European hospitals for viral hepatitis, bacterial colitis, cholera, amebic dysentery, infectious ache, sinusitis, bronchitis, flu, tuberculosis, hypertension, thyroid dysfunction and fatigue.
[This essential oil blend is an absolute "must have" if you suffer from aching joints, arthritis or rheumatism, or engage in any kind of work or sports activities that leave you with sore muscles --Ed.]
By the way, please remember that virtually all essential oils are multi-beneficial and multi-therapeutic, so long as they, arc pure, unadulterated first quality essential oils. Even though many of the essential oils described above are historically known for treating very specific symptoms, such as pain, insomnia, high blood pressure, or infection, virtually all of them work to oxygenate the cellular system of the human body, and are packed with vitamins natural hormones and a wide spectrum of crucial micronutrients which are carried directly into the cells and tissues of the body to oxygenate and nourish them. In short, one of the real beauties of high quality essential oils is that almost any of them will help stimulate the human immune system, and benefit your overall health and well being, regardless of the specific symptom for which you may be using that oil.
